Applesauce

SOo...Joe was working on refinishing a buffet we got for free (yea) and I stumbled upon a box of apples that we had against a wall. These apples we bought in December probably and have been stored in a cool garage but were beginning to look grumpy...so we made applesauce. Applesauce is super easy and yummy. Give it a try! Applesauce (an idea and not an official recipe)
  1. Wash, peel, core, and slice apples into chunks.
  2. Put into a heavy bottom pan on a medium low heat with about a 1/2 inch to an inch of water in the bottom of the pan.
  3. Cook on medium, stir often, break into smaller chunks, and cook until the apples go from white flesh to a golden yellow translucent color.
  4. At this point you can pull off and let cool a little or put into blender hot and process until smooth. Add water until it blends to the consistency you want.
  5. Add a dash of salt and jazz up with pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon. For a real treat add whipped cream or Cool Whip Lite in a dollop on top. The children love it warm, after dinner.
Applesauce freezes well in freezer Zipped bags and thaws quickly. It makes yummy muffins and moist breads (but ours never makes it that long unless I freeze it on the sly). Enjoy! Apple slices simmering: Still simmering, add water as needed to the bottom: Cooked apples in blender to be processed smooth. Finished product: homemade applesauce in bowl, enjoy!

What a great idea! I'll have to try and make applesauce--my girls eat enough of it I'm sure it would be cheaper to make it than buy it all of the time!
